Peterborough - Poetry reading with Katharine Gregg and Howard Faerstein.

Please join us as Katharine Gregg and Howard Faerstein introduce and read from their collections of poetry. They will also be available to sign copies.

Kathy Gregg is a former long-time resident of Mason. The poems in her collection Mere Thread explore her relationship with place and encounters with the world she inhabits. She is a former teacher and has an MFA in poetry from Vermont College. Her poems have appeared in journals like The North American Review, Cimarron, Nimrod and others.  She currently lives in Amherst, Massachusetts.

"'How do we get filled up, right to the top?' Katharine Gregg asks in this fine collection of poetry, Mere Thread. Certainly one way is by reading these poems with their lush, sensual images and keen observations-poems that also fill us with their rich study of historical figures, their delightfully imagined conversations with the likes of Henry Thoreau, Jonathan Edwards, Darwin, Mozart, Brahms. Gregg opens herself to large concerns, filling her poems, and us, with music and art, with acute attention to the natural world, and with delicate threads of spirit-all through language that is stunningly precise and beautiful."-Betsy Sholl

Howie Faerstein, a graduate of New England College’s MFA Program, is the author of the chapbooks: Play a Song on the Drums, he said and Out of Order (Main Street Rag) and two full-length collections: Dreaming of the Rain in Brooklyn and Googootz and Other Poems, both published by Press 53. His poetry and reviews can be found in Great River Review, Nimrod, CutThroat, Off the Coast, Rattle, upstreet, Nine Mile, Verse DailyNixes MateOn the Seawall, Peacock Journal, and Connotation. A five-time Pushcart Prize nominee, he’s co-poetry editor of Cutthroat, a Journal of the Arts, volunteers as a mentor at the Center for New Americans, and lives in Florence, MA.

From glaciers and Cossacks to present day “falsifiers” and New York jazz clubs, Howard Faerstein’s curious mind and associations will leave you breathless. With a naturalist’s eye and a musician’s ear, Faerstein crafts language that is crisp and fresh: “the downbeat of rain,” “the succor of stubble corn.” Echoing both Whitman and Ginsburg, Faerstein’s poems hold the wonder and sorrow of personal and collective history, yet always embrace the earth, our beating hearts. ~Gail Thomas, author of Odd Mercy and Waving Back
