Peterborough - Harry Haldt discussing and signing "Upper To'Gallants And Rusty Scuppers"

Please join us as Harry Haldt signs and discusses the book he put together after discovering his late father's journals and logbooks recording his maritime adventures when he went to sea at the age of 14 in 1930. They record his father's fondest memories from his first  job on the held-together-by-rust freighter the Ringford to his time aboard the beautiful square rigger Sea Cloud. Four generations of the Haldt family have been connected to the sea including Harry a captain in the US Navy. Sailors and sea lovers will enjoy this one!

Of the book Harry writes :

"A labor of love" best describes bringing the once lost memoir of my late father H. Peale Haldt Jr. to life.  Edited and compiled by his son Harry P. Haldt III, I was happy and proud to finish the project my father started and to preserve the stories too good to die.  The 197 page book details my father's adventures and experiences from his high school and college summer days in the 1930s working on ships at sea including a small freighter, schooner, round-the-world passenger liner, and the world's largest private sailing yacht "Sea Cloud."  It includes over 80 stories accompanied by photographs, images of diary entries, letters, maps, drawings, luggage stickers and other mementos discovered among family memorabilia.

Among many others, you'll meet Sven, "Cookie", the King and Nedenia.  You'll visit the Caribbean, maritime Canada, The Baltic Sea and the Orient.  You'll hear about the "bucket of bolts," the diving exhibition," the beerhall brawl," and the "Tower of Silence."   No one in the family remembers my father writing this book, but I am sure glad we found it along with all the accompanying documents.  I wish my father had shared this with us when he wrote it so we could have shared the fun with him.  Now I can share the fun with you.

Harry P. Haldt III, a retired Navy Captain and banker, lives in Fitchburg with his wife Susan.
