Some of my favorite novels come from authors who are primarily poets; I find they are more playful with structure, casting aside how you think a novel should be. That willingness to be more experimental works beautifully in Ben Lerner’s The Topeka School. It takes on masculinity, family dynamics, and existence in modern society that often feels on the brink of collapse.
