The late Harry Peale Haldt Jr. , Known as Peale, was born in Ridley Park, Pennsylvania in 1916. He grew up in Boonton, NJ, and went to Boonton HS. Haldt Jr. relates his experiences as a deckhand during his prep school and college summers aboard vessels from a freighter to a four-masted schooner during the 1930s. Aboard the four-masted barque Sea Cloud, the largest private sailing yacht in the world at it's time, he meets Nedenia Hutton, later known as the actress Dina Merrill, daughter of Marjorie Merriweather Post Close Hutton Davies, owner of Sea Cloud. Upper To-gallants and Rusty Scuppers includes Dina Merrill's letters to Peale, who also sailed around the world aboard the President Lines President Harrison during the summer of 1939, as the world prepared for war. He graduated from Colgate Uni. in '39. After having served in WWII he came home to begin his career with Huron Milling company in NY. He and his wife, Barbara, had two children, Jody and Harry.
Harry Peale Haldt III, spent countless hours putting together this collection featuring his father's adventures as a young man. Finding momentos Saved by his father and his grandparents he was able to come out with a great collection of stories in honor of his father. He is going to share with readers the adventures of an amateur mariner.
