In 1944, Raphael “Rafal” Lemkin a Polish attorney of Jewish descent created the word genocide. He combined the Greek word genos for “race/people” and the Latin word cide for “killing,” giving the following definition to the new world:
“The destruction of a nation or an ethnic group.”
Lemkin believed genocide was an international crime, threatening both interna-tional peace and the shared beliefs of humanity.
