08/06/2011 2:00 pm

STEVEN CLOSS signing and discussing WILLING SACRIFICE: GRANITE STATE VALOR DURING THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR 1861-1865 which explores the involvement, contributions, and heroism of some of New Hampshire’s most honored sons during the most tragic period in our nation’s history.

Thirty-six stories successfully demonstrate that Granite State soldiers were very much involved in some of the most famous battles of that war. In addition, they made significant contributions for union and the abolition of slavery through their individual acts of bravery and valor. Some of the heroes mentioned were awarded the Medal of Honor for their heroism.

Not all acts of bravery and valor resulted in spectacular victories. On the contrary, some of the most heroic efforts made by Granite Staters occurred during humiliating and crushing defeats.

Included in the stories are three direct contacts between New Hampshire soldiers and President Abraham Lincoln; to include that infamous evening at Washington, D.C.’s Ford’s Theater on Friday, April 14, 1865.
