Milford - JACKIE DAVIS presents and signs her new book, DIY Circus Lab for Kids!

Saturday, February 17, 2018 - 2:00pm

Book release event and signing: February 17, 2018, 2-4 p.m.

Local author Jackie Leigh Davis says, “You are absolutely perfect for learning circus!” She believes circus-making is for everyone -- from learning the skills to putting on a show -- and her new book shows how to do it. It was written with kids in mind, but it’s also for teachers, home-school families, youth program leaders, and anyone seeking new ideas for fun physical activities.

DIY Circus Lab for Kids is a family-friendly guide for juggling, balancing, clowning, and circus-making. At the book signing, the Circus Lab kids will demonstrate some circus skills. Davis will be joined by photographer Scot Langdon of Longhill Photo, videographer Joseph Laszlo, and Steve Opre of the Amherst Maker Space, to discuss how DIY Circus Lab for Kids was made.

The book teaches readers how to make their own circus props, and some are so simple you can start learning circus right away. Others require more time, tools, and adult supervision. The circus skills taught are the basics for absolute beginners, enough to get started and motivated to learn more. The book also gives access to a secret web page of video tutorials showing how to build the props, learn the basic skills, and put together acts and a show. Davis says circus is a great youth development tool, but most importantly it is a fun, social, and non-competitive activity that literally anyone can participate in. She says, “Circus is for everyone!”

Davis has taught circus in southern New Hampshire for twenty-three years. She created the Hilltop Circus at the Pine Hill Waldorf School (also performing on February 17!) as well as the Silver Lining Circus Camp and the Flying Gravity Circus -- all programs using circus arts education for positive youth development. Davis, a former professional mime, is a founding member of the American Youth Circus Organization which promotes the participation of youth in circus arts. Davis is a “circademic,” merging her passion for teaching circus with academic research, and holds a Master of Education degree in Human Development and Psychology from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Theater from the University of New Hampshire.
