KEENE - Matt Gallagher signing & talking about "Kaboom"

04/23/2011 2:00 pm

During the first half of 2008, Gallagher enlightened, amused, and horrified a large following of dedicated readers via his blog "Kaboom," relaying his experiences supporting the counterinsurgency efforts in Iraq. His musings ranged from the constancy of danger, to his daily missions and duties, to his thoughts about immortality, to stories about Bon Jovi cassettes being mistaken for IEDs. But what began as a soldier's lifeline to family and friends soon became a focal point of controversy. When the Army forced him to shut down his blog - and though some high-ranking Pentagon officials were rumored to have been disappointed that it would no longer be updated - there were reportedly several congressional inquiries regarding the matter.

Now in Kaboom: Embracing the Suck in a Savage Little War, Gallagher is able to freely share his journey through the Iraq war with his scouting platoon, the "Gravediggers," and later as an infantry officer in the "Wolfhounds." Whether coping with the ever-present threat of snipers and roadside bombs, debating the effectiveness of the overall military strategy, or struggling to discern candy-seeking local children from martyrs sent to kill, Gallagher's insights, anecdotes, and imagery offer a window into a war that we're only beginning to understand.

Matt Gallagher joined the Army in 2005 and received a commission in the armored cavalry. After a fifteen-month deployment, he left the Army in 2009. He now lives in New York City.
