Join us in welcoming Katherine to our store. She'll be signing and discussing her new memoir dealing with her triumph over five decades of emotional abuse. The Box of DAUGHTER exposes the dark truths hidden behind a family's facade - the bullying and abuse that can occur behind closed doors. As a young girl, the author found love and affection through relationships with cats, neighbors, and extended family. Entering therapy in her 30s, Katherine began to unravel the threads of dysfunction in the family. In 2008, she initiated an inspiring journey to wholeness - discovering self esteem and her true self - creating a life that is truly her own. The Box of DAUGHTER offers a message of hope that we can achieve emotional victory over the past and learn to love who we are. Katherine is the author of two books on the acting business and an award-winning short story called The Last Visit. She pursued a professional acting career, performing Off-Broadway, in the film The Unbelievable Truth, and on the daytime drama Guiding Light. She currently teaches writing in Maine. For most women, turning fifty can be a harsh signpost: the kids leaving, aging parents, losing friends and family, retirement looming. And our bodies are transforming once again, both on the outside and silently within. Yet 50 may be merely the halfway point in our lives. Now is the time to dig deep and be inspired to make and maintain the changes you want to live healthier. Mary will be talking about and signing her new book, Women: Fit at Fifty, A Guide for Living Long. As a Cardiac Nurse, Mary has written this book for all women - those who want to change behaviors, or have never exercised and think it's too late, even younger women who realize they will be 50 and want to prepare. This book is about celebrating you and wanting to live a much longer, richer life. Now! (Authorhouse, $15.95, ppk)

At 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 10, Blanch A. Nutting will sign and talk about her book, Monster in the Wall. All of us, young and old, often meet scary things in life. When we try to analyze the cause of our fears and deal with them, we can begin to put those fears in perspective and diminish them. It is with this belief that Nutting wrote this endearing story about her grandsons' experience and their subsequent dealing with a fear that became the source for a good laugh. Blanch A. Nutting, a middle child, was born into a large family in central Maine. She grew up caring for younger siblings and, at the age of eleven, babysitting neighbor kids. Children were always adored in her girlhood home and still are today as she engages with her two grandsons, ages eleven and eight. She has been married for 37 years to her husband, Allan, and together they have three grown children and two grandsons. Wednesday March 14, 2012

As a boy, Tovar spent his summers fishing for trout and hunting bullfrogs. While still in high school, he began experimenting with vegetarianism. By the age of twenty he was a vegan. A decade later, in the face of declining health, he returned to omnivory and within a few years found himself heading into the woods, rifle in hand. The Mindful Carnivore: A Vegetarian's Hunt for Sustenance continues the dialogue begun by Michael Pollan and Barbara Kingsolver of disparate worldviews and moral certainties. Are hunting and fishing barbaric? Can they be respectful ways to connect with nature and our food? How harmless is vegetarianism? Can both be motivated by similar values and instincts? The Mindful Carnivore invites us to reconsider what it means to eat. Tovar has worked as a logger, carpenter, and freelance writer. In 2009, he was awarded a graduate school fellowship by UMA, where his research focused on food, hunting, and human relationships with the natural world. He lives in VT with his wife, dog, and eclectic mix of cookbooks. Visit him at www.TovarCerulli.com. Start: 03/24/2012 1:00 pm

I felt compelled to write a story for children that paints a more realistic portrait of what it feels like to be different and to embrace your own strengths and nurture genuine relationships in your life. The main character, Clayton, has the ability to teach children that we all have things we are passionate about; we all have dreams; and we all need people who love us unconditionally. Taking control of your life starts with making the decision to live as a pilot instead of a passenger. A pilot's ability to fly comes from the knowledge and skill to manage the relationships between gravity, lift, drag, and thrust. Your ability to soar comes from the same place. By applying lessons learned in the cockpit to life on the ground, Scott kicks open the door to extraordinary success. Tom Shultz will sign & talk about his book, A 1940s Monadnock Childhood on Sun., April 15 at 2:00 p.m. Life for children who grew up in the Monadnock region of New Hampshire's countryside during the 1940s was simple and less complicated than the hustle and bustle of later decades. It was a time when storekeepers filled your orders and shoe stores actually repaired shoes. Morning chores included milking cows, and an evening out was square dancing at the local high school or going down to the movie theater, where tickets cost twenty-five cents. The towns of Peterborough, Dublin, Jaffrey and Hancock composed part of this picturesque landscape, which still attracts leaf peepers every autumn. Join author Tom Shultz as he chronicles the people and places of this disappearing way of life in the Monadnock region. Friday April 20, 2012

More than thirty-five years ago, Gordon Meyers, an aspiring writer with a low number in the draft lottery, packed his bags and reluctantly drove away, leaving behind Glenna Rising, the sharp-witted med student he couldn't imagine living without. Decades later, Gordon walks into Glenna's Manhattan office and she agrees to accompany him for a drink. As the two head out into the city, they rediscover the passion that once drew them together - before it tore them apart. With her walk across America at the age of 90, New Hampshire native Doris Haddock entered the national consciousness as "Granny D", a candid and feisty champion of commonsense politics. Granny D's American Century is the story of Doris both before and after the walk: as a young woman whose bedrock New England values were tested during the Great Depression, and as a no-nonsense nonagenarian putting those values to work in the cause of voter's rights and campaign finance reform. Written in clear, unsparing prose by Dennis Burke, Granny D's American Century is a warm reflection on a life well lived, and a spirited call for virtue today. Joining Dennis for his presentation will be a pair of actors: one in-character speaking as Granny in her early years; the second as the Granny we meet in her 90s. Together, Doris and Dennis wrote Walking Across America in My 90th Year, the subject of the documentary film Run, Granny, Run! Dennis is the former director of Arizona Common Cause, and is currently a writer living in Phoenix, AZ. (Univ. of NH Press, $27.95)

We'll be on-hand to sell books at the Open Studio in Groton, MA, where MARY JOHNSON will read from, chat about, and sign her wonderful memoir, An Unquenchable Thirst: Following Mother Teresa in Search of Love, Service, and an Authentic Life. At seventeen, Mary saw Mother Teresa's face on the cover of Time and experienced her calling. Eighteen months later she entered a convent in the south Bronx to begin her religious training. Not without difficulty, this Texas teen eventually adapted to the sisters' life of poverty and devotion, and in time became close to Mother Teresa herself. Still, beneath the white and blue sari beat the heart of an ordinary young woman facing the struggles we all share - the desire for love, connection, and identity. Sister Donata, as she became known, grappled with the politics of the order, and her faith for twenty years. Eventually Mary left the church to find her own path - one that led to love and herself. Beatriz visits us from Connecticut and will discuss "Overseas" in a conversation\interview with Bradford Bates, headmaster of Dublin School. In a sleight of time travel the romantic novel jumps between the present day financial world of New York City and that of a World War 1 soldier poet. The poets of the period and the history of that era, long an interest of Beatriz, will be the topic of the conversation. Join us this Memorial Day weekend for a historical salute to the soldiers, an immersion in high finance,--- with a lot of romance thrown in for spice. Start: 05/26/2012 2:00 pm
On Sat., May 26 at 2:00 p.m., G.M. Browning will sign and talk about his YA fantasy adventure, Cerulean Isle, a high-seas adventure with pirates and mermaidens! Kidnapped as a boy and kept as a slave on a pirate ship, young Jacob dreams of freedom, and of one day discovering the fabled island of the Mer people. With fellow shipmate Grant, Jacob escapes and finds refuge in Granada. But stories of Cerulean Isle, land of the Merfolk, continue to haunt him. One day a stranger appears and Jacob and Grant must embark on a dangerous voyage to flee from the pirates that seek their lives. In the process, Jacob at last discovers the truth behind legendary Cerulean Isle. New Hampshire author G.M. Browning has been writing fiction since elementary school. As an older brother to two, spinning tales of magic, fantasy and adventure was an important job throughout childhood. Storytelling is but one passion, as Browning draws inspiration from the many facets of his life. Playing the guitar, cruising in his old Firebird, bass fishing and video games are the simpler joys; though nothing makes him happier than spending time with his wife, Devin. Sunday May 27, 2012

Come join the celebration when local author KASEY MATHEWS visits on the National sale day of her debut book, PREEMIE: Lessons in Love, Life, and Motherhood. In this riveting, honest, and often humorous memoir, Preemie chronicles the journey of one tiny baby's tenacious struggle to hold on to life and the mother who ultimately grew with her. *Please note: by the time this event happens, we will (may?) have moved our new location to the upper building here at Lorden Plaza. Kasey's event will take place in the original, or lower building, next to Dollar Tree. Every effort will be made to get you to the right place! Thanks, and see you here!
