In striking contrast to previous critics of Native American writers, Lisa demonstrates the ways in which tribal leaders adopted writing as a tool to reclaim rights and land in the regions of what is now the northeastern United States.

Lisa Brooks is assistant professor of history and literature and of folklore and mythology at Harvard University.
