What do Louisa May Alcott and Henry David Thoreau have in common with the inventors of barbed wire, margarine and the washing machine? They were all deeply moved by their time spent in the beautiful Monadnock region of southwest New Hampshire. Inspired by beloved local storyteller Fritz Wetherbee, Historical Society of Cheshire County director Alan F. Rumrill collected their stories in his series, "Monadnock Moments", broadcast on Keene radio station WKNE from 1985 to 2005. Here he has gathered one hundred of his most interesting vignettes and paired them with historic images, chronicling the lives of successful businessmen, politicians and soldiers, and spinning tales of disaster, murder and adventure that all had their roots in towns like Keene, Stoddard, Walpole and Jaffrey. Entertaining, informative and often surprising, these snippets of history capture the essence of southwest New Hampshire. Wednesday November 04, 2009

Tens of thousands of residents were pushed back into the 19th century when electricity, telephones, water pumps and television sets stopped working. For many, it lasted nearly a month. With the hardship came the opportunity for people to help each other out, and that’s exactly what they did.

Geriatrician David McCullough has spent his life helping families to cope with their parents' aging and eventual final passage, experiences he faced with his own mother. In this comforting and much-needed book, My Mother, Your Mother, he recommends a new approach, which he terms "Slow Medicine." Shaped by common sense and kindness, grounded in traditional medicine yet receptive to alternative therapies, Slow Medicine advocates for careful anticipatory "attending" to an elder's changing needs rather than waiting for crises that force acute medical interventions - an approach that improves the quality of elders' extended late lives without bankrupting their families financially or emotionally. As Dr. McCullough argues, we need to learn that time and kindness are sometimes more important and humane at these late stages than state-of-the-art medical interventions. Friday December 04, 2009

Astrid Sheckels will be signing and talking about her new children's picture book, The Scallop Christmas, on Sat., Dec. 12 at 2:00 p.m. She has won a number of art awards, including the Archibald McLeish Prize for Art and the Medici Award in the Visual Arts. Astrid has spent much time in her mother's homeland of Denmark - her Scandinavian roots are evident in her illustrations - and she now lives and maintains her studio in the rolling hills of Greenfield, Massachusetts. About The Scallop Christmas: Times were tough in the small New England fishing village where Marcie lived. No one had any money, and work was hard to find. So the villagers rejoiced one glorious fall when an unexpected bounty of scallops filled their little bay. For young Marcie, a week of harvesting scallops also brought an unexpected adventure and a lesson about love that she would never forget. Start: 12/12/2009 2:00 pm
